On October 4, 2014 I attended my first fall senior shootout. For those who aren’t familiar with the term shootout, in the photography world it is a gathering of photographers who photograph models. It is great for portfolio building, as well as networking with other like-minded photographers.
This shootout was hosted by Stephanie Pana, a Chicagoland senior portrait photographer who has been featured on social content site Buzzfeed and many other publications such as Senior Style Guide and Lemonade and Lenses. If that wasn’t enough she also mentors other photographers, teaching them shooting and editing techniques. If you haven’t seen her work, you can check it out here. She has a unique style to her photography, that is very inspiring. The best part about Stephanie though was how down to earth she was. She held reflectors for the different groups while they shot, giving insight on how she would compose the shot and pose the model.
Location wise, this was a dream come true! There were so many nooks and crannies to shoot in that were grungy and urban. There were ivy covered garage doors, tin roofs, grafiti walls, rusty doors, old cars and even wild flowers in an alley. This allowed for a lot of versatility with the model and backdrop combinations. I would love to eventually shoot there again and explore when I have more free time.
It was such a fun experience being able to shoot alongside other photographers and getting to know them. I think the best part was the community that all the photographers had with one another such as holding reflectors or posing. And lets not forget, I ate at Portillo’s for the first time. Every time I think about their Italian beef sandwich my mouth waters! Their chocolate cake was pretty scrumptious too.
There were four models, Danya, Arielle, Amanda and Misael. Each of them had distinct and unique fashion styles. All the wardrobe styling was done by the models themselves. Opulent Beauty styled all the female models’ hair and makeup application. Take a look at these fabulous models!
