Engagement Session Tips

Hello! Today I’m going to be talking about a couple of tips to prepare for your upcoming engagement session. Engagement sessions are great for getting to know your potential wedding photographer, getting comfortable in front of the camera with your fiancé, as well as capturing this short and exciting chapter of your life.  Images from your engagement session are great for things like save the dates, wedding invitations, or a guest sign in book for your wedding day. But enough about the benefits let’s talk about how you can prepare and make the most out of your engagement session.

Engagement Session Tips

Tip number one: Ladies, get a trial run of your wedding day makeup and hair for your engagement session. This will help you to feel your best and eliminate any stress of doing it yourself. Bonus: with the time you will be saving from someone else doing your hair and makeup, you can catch up on pinning your dream wedding! Also to make the most out of your investment with the engagement shoot, plan a hot date afterwards to take advantage of you both looking your best!

Tip number two: For my engagement sessions I recommend to clients to select a location  that has significance to them as a couple such as where they met, their first date, or where he proposed. This will create a more meaningful session unique to only that couple.

Tip number three: I recommend to my couples to bring at least 2 to 3 outfits to their session. Typically I shoot couples in 2 outfits (one formal look and one casual look) but it is always good to have a backup outfit in case of any malfunctions or otherwise.  Shoes apply to this as well. Nothing worse than sinking into the soft ground in your favorite pair of heels, even if it does make for hilarious photos. Some tips for men who will be wearing dress shirts for the session: avoid patterns with thin stripes because it will cause moire, hang the pressed dress shirt(s) on a hanger in the car as opposed to wearing it on the car ride to the session to avoid wrinkles.

Tip number four: Ladies I highly recommend getting a fresh manicure the day before or the day of your engagement session because I will be photographing the ring, hand holding, etc. and chipped/unkept nails will be very distracting in those pictures.

Ladies, one place you can find awesome formal dresses and gowns for your engagement shoot is a place called RENT THE RUNWAY. I highly recommend this company if you want to make a fashion statement at your engagement shoot, but not break the bank. You can also rent things like accessories, handbags and wraps/outerwear. Men’s Wearhouse, Banana Republic, or J.Crew are great places to find formal clothing and suits for men.

I hope this post is helpful in preparing for your upcoming engagement session. For any brides who have already gone through this process and have any additional tips or advice shout them out in the comments area below.
