I decided to compile a list of 4 questions to ask when hiring your wedding photographer. Searching for wedding vendors can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to hiring the perfect wedding photographer. Hopefully these are helpful to you.
Questions to Ask When Hiring Your Wedding Photographer
1. Are they a wedding photographer full-time or do they also have another job? People who have full-time jobs in addition to being a photographer are called weekend warriors. This may affect turnaround time with your wedding images or decrease the individualized attention that you receive from them. This is not a hard and fast rule, but definitely something to consider.
2. Does the photographer you are considering specialize in weddings or do they photograph: weddings, seniors, newborns, children, maternity, family, birth photography, pets, head shots, etc? Sometimes when a photographer’s attention and education is diverted across so many genres of photography, it is hard for them to truly hone their skill in any specific genre.
3. If you are hiring a wedding photographer duo (primary and second shooter) are they male/female, male/male, female/female? This is something else to consider if you want pictures getting into your dress and getting ready. Would you feel more comfortable with a male or female photographer taking pictures while you’re getting ready with your bridesmaids?
4. Ask the photographer to see a gallery or galleries of weddings they shot from start to finish. Unfortunately not many photographers are proficient in operating flashes. If you have ever attended a wedding reception you know how dark it can get. Without an extensive knowledge of flash, your reception photos could easily be ruined. The photos could either come out blurry or extremely grainy. Understandably photographers only display their best work on their websites. Seeing a whole wedding gallery will show how well rounded their shooting knowledge and techniques are. Here
is a blog post that goes into more detail about this specific question by Trevor Daley, an award-winning wedding photographer.
I hope these questions will help you in selecting a wedding photographer that will be a perfect fit for you.
